Final Blog from IBIA 8th World Congress on Brain Injury

By Bruce Stern

ADVERTISEMENTS

I have now had an opportunity to return home from the IBIA 8th World Congress on Brain Injury.  I have now had time to reflect on the wonderful lectures I attended at the Congress.

What struck me is the disconnect between the field of neuropsychology and the other scientific fields.  Throughout the Congress I listened to neuropsychiatrists, neuro-imaging experts and neuro-scientists, who have all objectively documented brain injury, not only in cases of severe and moderate traumatic brain injury but mild traumatic brain injury as well.  Despite the overwhelming scientific evidence that mild traumatic brain injury not only exists but that its residuals can be permanent, I am struck by the fact that in the field of neuropsychology, there still appears to be some debate despite a lack of objective evidence to the contrary.  One must question when or if neuropsychology will ever catch up or will it become totally irrelevant as it is replaced by future advances in neuro-imaging.
