By Edward Bills

ADVERTISEMENTS

An Iowa jury has ruled that a Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. tire was the cause of a fatal rollover of a minivan in 2007, saying that the tire “was not state of the art when it was designed and manufactured.” The accident left one dead and another paralyzed from the neck down. Jurors awarded $28.4 million to Ivon Toe, the woman rendered a quadriplegic by the accident, and $649,000 to the estate of Assata Karlar who was killed in the accident. Another $1.5 million was dived out among various family members of the two. The tire company was also ordered to pay punitive damages of $1.5 million.
