Weird, or Just Lots of Pictures? Ranking the World's Strangest Pleadings

By Anne Skove, Esq.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Slate's Bonnie Goldstein calls it The Weirdest Legal Pleading Ever.

We beg to differ, 'cause we've been around some. Frivolous filings by redemptionists top our list.

Next, see the hilarious collection of Unforgettable Pleadings, Legal Antics (January 28, 2008).

That said, this Slate document is not your average pleading. Here it's a lawyer being frivolous, and he has made very creative use of pictures (implying that the judges couldn't function without the visual aids). Somewhere in all the rules about page length and font size, they forgot to mention "no graphics".

Also interesting is the lawyer (for now) himself, who has publicly blamed video games for massacres. See Playing the Blame Game, Winda Benedetti, MSNBC (February 18, 2008). (Now that Gary Gygax has run out of life points, the blame must go somewhere, right?)

For more pleading fun, see the fight over Christmas Break scheduling,

Finally, courtesy Judge Monty Ahalt, we leave you with an Oklahoma U.S. District Judge whose last nerve was sat upon by some bickering lawyers:

"If there is a hell to which disputatious, uncivil, vituperative lawyers go, let it be one in which the damned are eternally locked in discovery disputes with other lawyers of equally repugnant attributes."

That's one way to settle a discovery dispute!
