: Legal Pad | LAMenifee council at odds over new city attorney bids suggestion

Councilwoman Darcy Kuenzi called Tuesday for new bids for a city attorney. The call comes on the heels of a monthlong audit that will review
all city contracts, invoices and financial controls.
Eight law firms submitted bids to the city before the council hired Besty Martyn's firm, Los Angeles-based Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith, in July 2008. Martyn is currently working under an expired contract, although the contract automatically renews on a month-to-month basis.
Kuenzi has focused on Martyn's contract because of its size and said she wants to "look around where there are opportunities to save the city money." In addition, she looked into Martyn's contract because of $74,000 in city overpayments that went to Martyn's firm over six months last year.
Some of Kuenzi's colleagues are questioning her singling out of Martyn's contract.
