FROM THE UPCOMING ISSUE  |  Senate Judiciary Committee clears bill authorizing cameras in federal courtrooms
"The Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation Thursday authorizing the chief judges of federal district and appellate courts to permit cameras in courtrooms. The so-called Sunshine in the Courtroom Act would allow photographing, electronic recording, broadcasting or televising of court proceedings except when it would violate the due process rights of any party."

FROM THE UPCOMING ISSUE  |  Justices to focus on paralegal costs
"A small security business that waged a long and successful court battle with the federal government over back wages is asking the Supreme Court to hold that a federal law, enacted nearly 30 years ago, allows reimbursement of paralegal expenses at market rates and not at a law firm's cost. Attorney Brian Wolfman will argue before the high court that paralegal services should be considered "attorney fees" rather than 'other expenses' for the purpose of reimbursement."

WEB-ONLY  |  Defense counsel in past settlement raises questions about Milberg Weiss expert witness
"A defense lawyer who helped craft a multimillion-dollar securities class action settlement in 2000 has raised questions about the validity of his opponent's damages expert, John B. Torkelsen, who pleaded guilty to perjury last month in the federal government's kickback case against Milberg Weiss."

OPINION

NOOSE IMAGERY  |  Follow Tiger's lead
"Billie Holiday rightfully lamented 'strange fruit' when lynchings were a horrific spectator sport. A vestige of this shameful period lingers: the periodic appearance of the hangman's noose. It is the blatant attempt to infuriate and humiliate by anonymously posting a noose that ignites public outrage. To halt this behavior, society must deprive the perpetrator of the attention he seeks. If such acts are greeted with a collective shrug of pity, the sick gratification of these criminals will be undermined."
