For instance, a whiff of Chanel # 5 reminds me of my Mother, all dressed up with her gorgeous dark green dress coat, coming in to kiss me goodnight after coming home from a night out with my Dad. Pine needles remind me of Christmas morning, and a campfire reminds me of camping with my family in Flagstaff, Arizona, when my Mom and Dad taught my brother and I the finer points of S'more making. The Armani perfume in a gold tube takes me back to high school (hellllooo mascara! and poofy ponytails!) and Clinique Happy reminds me of a good friend from middle school (I think she bathed in it).
But Hugo by Hugo Boss?
Immediately transports me back to my sophomore year of high school. My boyfriend and all his friends (who were oh-so-cool seniors) drenched themselves in it. Yesterday, I was on the bus heading into work and someone (I'm going to go ahead and assume it was a man) had similarly drenched himself in the stuff. And there I was, in suit, with a briefcase, thinking of the days of cheerleading practice and my cheerleading uniform, the obnoxious amount of mascara I coated on every morning, eating diner fries & cheeseburgers after the games, my boyfriend's horrible family van that he drove me everywhere in, the amount of hairspray my best friends and I used to perfectly poof our stacked bobs (oh yes, I straigthened this lions mane every single morning in order to properly wear my super-short Posh-Spice-esque bob), and my favorite pair of perfectly broken in Lucky jeans. Oh and my Doc Martens. Of which I owned 6 pairs.
And then the bus arrived at my stop and I was back in the world of business formal, pulled up professional hair styles, briefcases and perfectly selected dress socks, paying the bills on time, breakfast meetings and law school textbooks.
My how times have changed.
Here's to hoping that other people have this same odd phenomenon, that they have something that one whiff of will take them to another world. And here's to hoping their other world doesn't include 6 pairs of Doc Martens. Because, seriously people....what was I thinking?
