Nissan's Brake and Gas Gauge Recall

By Jamie Sheller

ADVERTISEMENTS

It has been reported in the news that Japan's third largest automaker, Nissan, announced Wednesday it would be recalling approximately 540,000 vehicles worldwide for brake pedal defects and faulty fuel gauges. While accidents and injuries have not been reported, Nissan plans to inspect and fix what is necessary to remedy the brake and fuel gauge defects.

The brake pedal recall is for the following vehicles: Titan pickup trucks, Armada SUV, Infiniti QX56 SUV, and the Quest minivans built between 2008 and 2010. These vehicles have been recalled due to the loosening of brake pedal pins which can cause the brake pedal to become unsteady and difficult to operate while driving. While there have been three reports of problems associated with the loosening of the brake pedal pins, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries.

In addition, Nissan has recalled the following vehicles for faulty gas gauges: the Titan, both the Armada and Infiniti QX56 SUVs built from 2005 to 2008, the Frontier, both the Pathfinder and the Xterra built between January and March 2006 and between October 2007 and January 2008. The recall has been announced because there is concern that vehicles with higher mileage may have their gas gauges indicate a greater amount of fuel in the tank than what is actually remaining; this could cause the vehicle to run out of gas without warning. Nissan stated that vehicle owners affected by this recall should maintain at least half a tank of fuel at all times until the fuel gauge has been repaired.

Nissan has placed blame on its suppliers' manufacturing errors. The car maker's supplier of the faulty brake pedal pins is KSR International, based in Canada. Inergy Automotive Systems, of Paris, is at fault for the faulty fuel gauges.
