Commercial Ice Machines Recalled Due to Fire Hazard

By Paul Napoli

ADVERTISEMENTS

February 26, 2010

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Scotsman Group LLC, of Vernon Hills, IL, announced that the company is recalling about 43,000 commercial ice machines because they can catch fire.

Scotsman Group LLC has received reports of 4 fires and 37 instances of burned or melted components, determining that the solenoid, an electrical component in the ice machine, can fail and result in an electrical arc that can pose a fire hazard.

Subject to this recall are Scotsman® Commercial Modular Cube Ice Machines (Modular Cubers) sold in the United States at commercial food service equipment distributors and dealers nationwide from September 2006 through December 2009 for between $4,000 and $14,000. These machines used mainly in commercial applications, installed on top of ice storage bins or dispensers.

Consumers will find the model and serial numbers on the back of all machines and, depending on the model, behind the machine's front pane, either in the lower right corner of the machine or on the left side of the sheet metal wall, which separates the larger (equipment) compartment from the smaller (ice-making) compartment. Model numbers begin with C0322, C0330, C0522, C0530, C0630, C0830, C1030, C1448, C1848, C2148, EH130, EH222, EH330, or EH430, and serial numbers of the recalled machines within these model designations begin with 05, 06, 07, 08 or 09.

The CPSC and Scotsman Group LLC recommend that consumers cease using the machines immediately and call (800) 541-0520 to schedule a repair.

If you have been injured or sustained property damage as the result of this ice machine, then you need the services of an experienced attorney who has successfully handled product liability cases. Products liability is the branch of law that deals with the liability of parties involved in the manufacturing of a product for any damages caused by the product. Defective products can cause a great deal of property damage or physical injury, even death. At Napoli Bern Ripka, LLP, our attorneys will work with you to begin the process of filing a claim so you can recover damages for repair or replacement of your property or for medical expenses incurred because of your injury. Call 888-529-4669 today.
