Diabetics Warned of Blood Glucose Test Strips Recall

By Paul Napoli

ADVERTISEMENTS

February 27, 2010

LifeScan, Inc., of Milpitas, CA, announced the company is voluntarily recalling specific lots of test strips, which are used to measure blood glucose levels in diabetic people, because the test strips may provide falsely low glucose results when the glucose level is higher than 400 mg/dL.

This recall affects the following eight lots of OneTouch® SureStep ® Test Strips sold for consumer use and select SureStepPro ® Test Strips used in healthcare facilities:

2969251 100-ct OneTouch SureStep

2969798 100-ct OneTouch SureStep

2982369 100-ct OneTouch SureStep

2983467 100-ct OneTouch SureStep

2969795 50-ct OneTouch SureStep

2982566 50-ct OneTouch SureStep

2969481 50-ct Medicare/Mail Order

2998193 50-ct Medicare/Mail Order

When using these test strips to determine insulin dosage, the falsely low reading may cause diabetics or hospital personnel to administer too little insulin, resulting in poor blood glucose control. Diabetics with high blood glucose may, but not always, exhibit certain symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, headaches, difficulty with concentration, blurred vision and fatigue (weak, tired feeling). If high blood glucose is not recognized and treated promptly, diabetics may suffer serious consequences such as coma and death.

Users of these recalled test strips should contact LifeScan at 800 574-6139 to order a replacement product free of charge. Until the replacement product arrives, LifeScan recommends that patients and hospital personnel use alternate means to test blood glucose levels. If no alternative method is available, they should continue to use the recalled test strips and consult a doctor if they obtain results above 400 mg/dL because glucose may be significantly higher.

If you or a loved one suffered injury or a loved one died due to these defective OneTouch® SureStep ® or SureStepPro ® Test Strips or another defective medical device, you may be entitled to compensation for your injury, a loved one's injury or wrongful death. Please contact Napoli Bern Ripka, LLP at 888-529-4669 to discuss your options for filing a claim and recovering compensation for your medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering.
