: Law Blog - WSJ.comIntroducing: The Secret Lives of Lawyers Series!
By Dan Slater
When I came to New York for law school in the ’90s, I was going out dancing all the time. . . . One night a go-go dancer at Kitsch Inn didn’t show up, and the promoter asked me to dance in her place. . . . It was scary, and I still thought go-go dancing was a bit raunchy, but I did it anyway. . . . I got a lot of cheers, and it was exhilarating. I liked the attention: I’m an exhibitionist. — Anonymous Lawyer-cum-Go-Go Dancer, Time Out New York
We don’t really read Time Out on a regular basis, but when the Law Blog’s girlfriend brought the latest issue back from the gym last night, our eyes caught on the cover story: “Secret Lives of New Yorkers.” Thinking, hmmm, bet there’s a lawyer mentioned in there, we grabbed the mag on the way out the door this morning.
Whaddya know? One of the first stories begins with the above tale, and continues: “I was working as an attorney for a prominent family-law practitioner when I started go-go dancing professionally, and I certainly didn’t advertise my nighttime activities. I kept my MySpace page private, and my boss never knew a thing. I felt nervous sometimes—like, what if my coworkers knew the real me?—and I felt embarrassment in the pit of my stomach. But certainly none of our high-powered clients were going to be walking into the club.”
Loyal LB’ers: We’ve heard of lawyers who box and lawyers who compete in roller derby competitions and lawyers with serious things for Bob Dylan — and now we’ve heard of one who go-go dances. We’d love to know what other odd, offbeat, interesting or just plain funny extracirriculars lawyers take up. If you or someone you know has an interesting story, please write in to lawblog@wsj.com and let us know!
