: Legal Pad | LAReal estate fraud scheme lands five in prison
By Richard Binder
Edward Seung Ok, a 40-year-old Huntington Beach man, was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison yesterday for his role in a $12-million real estate fraud scheme that targeted about 100 homeowners in southern California who faced foreclosures, according to federal prosecutors.
U.S. Attorney's office spokesman Thom Mrozek said Ok, who had pleaded guilty to mail fraud, was discovered to have violated his plea agreement by not providing investigators with access to an overseas account, in which Ok had transferred more than $1.6 million during the course of the scheme. He had used some of the secret funds for personal expenses, such as a Lamborghini and illegal drugs.
Martha Rodriguez, the admitted mastermind of the operation, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for operating the scam through her real estate and escrow agencies in Seal Beach and Downey.
