A Buffalo Grove woman has received a $1 million settlement for damages she received in a three-car collision over three years ago.

Marissa Palmer, 22, was the plaintiff against defendant and former best friend Dana Horowitz of Highland Park, Illinois, according to attorney Francis Patrick Murphy, who represented Palmer along with Edward Willer of the Chicago law firm Corboy and Demetrio.

Palmer and Horowitz were undergraduate students at the University of Wisconsin when the collision occurred in November 2006, stated Murphy. They were en route from Madison to Highland Park in Horowitz?s Jeep Cherokee on icy roads as a result of freezing rain and falling snow.

Witnesses were prepared to testify at trial that Horowitz was driving about 60 mph while other drivers were traveling at speeds of 25 to 30 mph, Murphy said.

Horowitz lost control of the Jeep, which caused her to travel eastbound into the grassy median toward the westbound traffic lanes. The Jeep rolled and Palmer was ejected from the vehicle and another vehicle struck the Jeep.

Palmer was the only person injured in the accident. She suffered spinal, neck, and rib fractures, a lacerated spleen and liver, a closed head injury and road rash injuries on her back, Murphy said.

The matter was brought before Circuit Judge David Hall on Monday.
