I'm a Big Girl Now???

ADVERTISEMENTS
I've lived in my current apartment near Useless University for almost 5 years now. It's the first place I ever lived by myself, the first place where I had to pay rent and utilities, and act like a grown up with real furniture and responsibilities. But the apartment really is a student apartment. The amenities aren't great, there's no washer/dryer and the kitchen is horrendously tiny. Finally, after 5 years of lugging my laundry over to my parent's house on a semi regular basis I decided enough is enough. I love this apartment, I love the part of town it's in, but I can afford a nicer place and it's time for a change, it's time for a "big girl" apartment.

And so I set out this weekend to look at what felt like hundreds of apartments in Useless City. In reality, I only toured about 7 or 8 apartments and I was lucky enough to find one that I absolutely adore. It's very sunny and open, floor to ceiling windows facing west, 9 foot ceilings, hardwood floors and granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances. Although they don't pay me big bucks to be a prosecutor, they pay me more than enough to afford this place and I'm simply thrilled. I don't move in until mid February. I suppose that's good because packing up the last 5 years of my life is definitely no small task, but I'm so excited about the new place that it seems entirely too long to have to wait a month and a half.

I contemplated moving last summer before the start of 3L year, I even did an application and put a deposit down on an apartment that I liked. I hated every part of looking for an apartment last summer and 3 days after I did my application I had a breakdown of sorts, got totally freaked out about moving and decided that I just didn't want to move and didn't want to give up my cozy little place. But this time it's different, I finally feel like I've outgrown this place. There are some great memories from this place and many fun times were had, but like all things in life eventually you need to move on to bigger and better things. Here's hoping I still feel good about this decision 3 days from now . . .
