Infant Head Injury and Reports of Product Defect Prompt Recall of 447,000 Infant Car Seat/Carriers

By Paul Napoli

ADVERTISEMENTS

December 19, 2009

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in cooperation with Dorel Juvenile Group Inc., announced a recall of the company's infant car seat/carrier because the product is a fall hazard to infants.

This recall involves 447,000 Safety 1st, Cosco, Eddie Bauer and Disney branded infant car seat/carriers because the company has received 77 reports of the child restraint handle fully or partially detaching from the car seat/carrier when consumers use the product as an infant carrier. At least three injuries to infants have occurred, including bumps, bruises and a head injury.

The infant car seat/carriers were packaged together with a stroller as a Travel System. The stroller portion is not affected by the recall. The product was sold at department and juvenile product stores across the U.S. from January 2008 through December 2009 for between $120 and $220.

Consumers can identify the recalled product by locating the model number below and a manufacture date from January 6, 2008 through April 6, 2009 located on a label on the side of the car seat/carrier.

Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately and contact Dorel Juvenile Group at (866) 762-3316 to receive a free repair kit. Consumers should not use the handle of the car seat/carrier until the repair kit has been installed. The product can continue to be used as a car seat when properly installed in the vehicle.

In February 2009, Dorel Juvenile Group Inc. recalled 100,000 Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gates because the hinges that hold the stair gate in place could break, posing a fall hazard to children if the gate is placed at the top of the stairs.

In May 2009, the company recalled about 71,000 U.S. and 5,600 Canadian Eddie Bauer Soothe & Sway Play Yards because an infant can then become wedged in the corner or pressed against the side or bottom of the bassinet, posing a risk of suffocation or positional asphyxiation.

In July 2009, the company recalled 28,350 Maxi-Cosi Mico Infant Car Seats because of attachment difficulties between the infant carrier and the base, which could cause injury to the child in the event of a crash.
