Use Pillar Content to Build a Solid Foundation For Your Blog (Day 29-31 Kick Butt)

ADVERTISEMENTS

800px-pillars_at_front_of_war_memorial.jpg 470×314 pixels.jpgOnce again I want to touch on the subject of content. And for day 29 of 31-Days to Kick Your Blog in the Butt, I want to spend some time talking about “Pillar Content.” Before we go too far in today’s post, it will be useful to discuss what exactly is a Pillar post.

Today’s Lesson

Pillar content has been described as content which holds up the rest of your blog. The showcase of your best stuff. And one of the better descriptions of Pillar Content, “A pillar article is usually a tutorial style article aimed to teach your audience something. Generally they are longer than 500 words and have lots of very practical tips or advice.” The key is the very fact it is content that is long lasting and even sticky. This series could be considered Pillar Content.

Pillar Content could even be the foundation content for a brand new blog. Content which really gets the attention of your new readers which causes them to tell others about you and your blog.

What will Pillar Content do for you?

  • It will bring you new readers and even links.
  • It will bring your readers back again and again. Especially if it is contained in an ongoing series.
  • It is sticky and if you highlight the content in a “best of” location, people will continue to refer to it even if it gets buried deep in your archives.
  • It will bring in search engine traffic if you are conscience of using keywords and good content
  • It is timeless. It should still be good content even after a year or two.

Here are some of the typical types of posts which could be Pillar Content

How to post - Think about your niche or industry and work on some how to post which teach your readers how to do something. One word of caution, make sure you actually know and understand the topic. If you get a lot of questions from customers or clients on how to do something, that is a great place to start.

Definition post - Almost every niche or industry has key concepts or a set of terms people want to know about. Produce a pillar post which provides the definitions of these key concepts or terms. You could even just provide a glossary page, explaining each term a bit more.

List post - This is a great way to come up with Pillar Content post. List are easy to read and provide information your readers are looking for. What is also great about list post, your readers will more likely than not, share it with others. Your Pillar Content list post may just go viral for you.

Homework

Over the next week or so you need to create 5 to 10 post which contain some of your best stuff. Valuable content which can be a series of post which should showcase your expertise and “sell” your blog to new readers as they arrive on your blog. If your blog is new, publish each piece as soon as you complete it. In other words, get the stuff up on your blog so people notice it. This really needs to be some kick ass content. Remember all those things we have talked about as far as formatting the posts so they are easy to read. And use some images which relate to the theme of the content too.

Finally, take advantage of the network you should have been building over the last 28 days or so. Make sure you are pushing out your Pillar Post to twitter and ask for RT’s. Have you been building a list? If you have, send out a quick newsletter to your list telling everyone you are publishing a short series and tell them what it is about. Promote your new Pillar Post series.
