Lexis/Nexis sued over e-filing ripoff

By Glen Ashman

ADVERTISEMENTS

I want to applaud this lawyer. It is inexcusable how some state courts have teamed with Lexis to in effect jack up filing fees to allow e-filing of cases.  Electronic filing done right should be free.  The federal dcourts have it right.  The Lexis mess that some state courts use is far inferior, costs a lot, and doesn't have the ease of use.  Lexis needs to lose this case:

Solo Sues LexisNexis, Court Officials Over E-Filing Fees
Fulton County Daily Report

After doing a required electronic filing of an emergency motion, plaintiffs attorney Steven J. Newton considered the LexisNexis File & Serve system wonderful -- until he got the bill. Now the solo practitioner has filed a potential class action alleging that the program is illegal. The File & Serve system, he argues, amounts to a "litigation toll booth" that imposes unauthorized fees. In addition to class certification, the suit requests an injunction barring further collection of the File & Serve fees.
