: Dispatches from the Culture WarsConsent Decree in TN Religious Posters Case
By Ed Brayton
The Alliance Defense Fund and Lakeview Elementary School in Wilson County, TN, have reached an agreement on a consent decree allowing students to put up posters advertising religious events that are not school-sponsored. Back in May, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction in the case and the consent decree makes that outcome permanent.
As I wrote at the time, the judge was absolutely right. There was a limited public forum established, allowing community groups to post fliers and posters advertising events. The students who put up posters advertising the National Day of Prayer and the See You At the Pole event even put a disclaimer on those posters saying, "See You At The Pole is a student initiated and student led event and is not endorsed by Lakeview Elementary or Wilson County Schools."
