Drug bust ensnares San Bernardino locals

Among the 16 suspected drug runners indicted by the Imperial County Grand Jury yesterday are two San Bernardino County residents, Lorena Lara of Fontana and Juan Berumen Sandoval of Rialto.  All have been charged with conspiracy to transport cocaine and other crimes.

The arrests come after an eight-month investigation of the Sinaloa cartel's Southern California operations, which also resulted in the seizure of 420 pounds of cocaine, 136 pounds of marijuana, $1.7 million in cash and 11 vehicles.

The 16 people that were indicted are accused of smuggling cocaine and marijuana using vehicles with hidden compartments for drugs. Some of the charges, including those against Lara and Sandoval, involve transporting drugs from Imperial County to San Bernardino County.
