Archaeology Travel Photos at Flickr : Over 700 Group Members and More Than 8000 Photographs : Stonehenge as an Example

By Andis Kaulins

ADVERTISEMENTS
The Archaeology Travel Photos group that we started at Flickr some years ago has taken on a life of its own.

As of today the group counts 710 members and 8052 photographs, many of them quite spectacular.

Archaeology Travel Photos at Flickr is intended for:

"Travel photos of objects of interest to archaeology: especially megalithic sites, megaliths, dolmens, cairns, prehistoric rock art, cave paintings, aerial photos of archaeological sites."

Below is one of our own photos at Flickr, a photograph of Stonehenge which we have combined with an illustrated plan of the location of the stones.

This photograph shows Stonehenge from the Northeast, looking Southwest. We call this the most informative photograph of Stonehenge on the Internet because it actually shows you WHAT you are looking at in terms of all the sarsens and trilithons which are found at this ancient astronomical megalithic site. You are looking at Stonhenge here from the Heel Stone and from the position of the Sun at the Summer Solstice (i.e. with the Sun at your back) looking toward the Stonehenge circle of megaliths, i.e. as if you were looking at Stonehenge from the bottom of the Stonehenge plan toward the top. In other words, in the photo you are facing the open end of the horseshoe of trilithons and view that side of Stonehenge which still has the most intact stones (the black-colored markings). The middle light markings show stones that have fallen but are still located at the site. Very light markings show stones that are missing (or allegedly missing). When you now see other Stonehenge photographs, ask yourself what they represent.
