: Norfolk-Portsmouth Personal Injury LawyerDetails emerge of lives lost in Suffolk (VA) crash
By Jim Lewis
More is becoming known about Shane Blair and Thomas Ashburn, the two Suffolk men killed in a two-car head-on crash on Indian Trail Road in Suffolk Sunday morning.
Blair, 18, had spent the weekend camping with family on the Chowan River in North Carolina, WAVY-TV reported.
"We got up and cooked breakfast, cooked bacon and eggs," his grandmother, Sue Blair, told the TV station. "Everyone changed into their swim suits and we all went boating."
Blair and his best friend, Ben Copeland, 17, were driving home when their pickup truck was struck head-on by a car driven by Ashburn, 28, of Suffolk.
Blair was getting ready to begin his junior year at Kings Fork High School. His family described him on WAVY as "a good-hearted country boy who loved to hunt and fish and wanted to marry his high school sweetheart."
Ashburn, according to an obituary published in The Virginian-Pilot, was a Suffolk native, member of the Suffolk Golf Association and assistant superintendent of the Suffolk Course.
Ashburn was a Virginia Tech graduate and a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Suffolk police. The crash happened Sunday afternoon when Ashburn's Volkswagen car crossed the center line and collided with the pickup truck – driven by Copeland – head on.
