Will new baseball helmet prevent brain injuries?

By Michael Kaplen

ADVERTISEMENTS

Today's New York Times has a story entitled, "Batting Helmet Is Safer, but Players Hate the Look" detailing a new helmet developed by the Rawlings company and intended to be introduced for major league baseball to prevent brain damage to baseball players.

According to the story, the new helmet is designed to resist impacts of up to 100 miles per hour.l  A skull fracture can be caused by impacts by balls traveling as slow as 32 miles per hour. The helmets will protect against skull fractures, but importantly, will not prevent concussions from happening or the consequences of a concussion, known as the post concussion syndrome.

Hopefully this new helmet will become the standard in both the major league as well as in amateur baseball with a warning that the helmet is not designed to and will not protect players against concussions.
