Lawyer Leaves Law for Life on 'Avenue Q'

Who would have thought that a law degree could ever help with a creative career in the music industry? After all, the only notes that lawyers ever write are footnotes or case notes, neither of which is very lyrical. Yet Jeff Marx says his legal training helped him get his start in a music career that culminated in a Tony Award for the Broadway musical "Avenue Q," as this Bitter Lawyer profile points out. As a musical theater major in college, Marx planned a career in singing and acting but wasn't good at it, he says, so he chose entertainment law as a backup. Marx attended Cardozo law school because of its reputation in entertainment law and graduated in 1996, after which he worked for entertainment lawyers, then eventually hung out a shingle. Still, he remained dissatisfied. He says: I always felt like I was tying up other people?s loose ends and cleaning up other people?s dirty laundry. I envied the clients and had this deep feeling I really wanted to be the client, not the lawyer. But eventually, the law led Marx into writing musicals.
