Jail Negligent in Inmate Death, Lawsuit Claims

A Houston jail and its nursing staff were negligent in the death of a 44-year-old diabetic woman, a lawsuit filed Thursday by family members alleges. According to the lawsuit, nurses at the Harris County jail failed to treat Margarita Saavedra for a painfully infected knee despite requests from the family, her attorney and jail doctors. Saavedra later died of a blood infection.  Last month the U.S. Department of Justice issued a report blasting the jail for a disturbing number of inmate deaths and for its treatment of prisoners.
