Unemployment Rises: Bankruptcy a Logical Option for Many Americans

By writer

ADVERTISEMENTS

New figures were released recently that state the current unemployment rate is up to 9.5 percent in the United States. As much as we?d like to believe that the economy has begun to pull itself out of this deep economic recession, it appears that we?ve still got some sinking to do before any upward momentum can happen. This unfortunately means that bankruptcy is becoming a very real option for many citizens as they truck forward without steady work or steady income.

When asked to comment on this troubling statistic, the Labor Department said their guess is that this level of unemployment will remain for some time, possibly even a number of years. Not good news for many jobless Americans who are waiting anxiously for the economy to improve.

This sort of economic climate reminds us just exactly why bankruptcy was etched into our laws in the first place. The primary purpose of bankruptcy is to help out individuals and families that have fallen on rough economic times. Maybe your credit is maxed out or you just lost your job and your bills are months overdue. Whatever the case may be, there is help available for you, and it can help improve your life.

But isn?t bankruptcy a bad thing? You might seem to remember in Monopoly when you receive a bankruptcy status it means you?ve lost the game. In real life however, successfully filing for bankruptcy can be a whole new beginning, like starting the game over again without owing the other players thousands of dollars and forfeiting your property.

So the question you?re probably asking yourself is this; ?should I file for bankruptcy or wait for things to get better?? That?s a tough decision. Our current economic state is being compared to the Great Depression and taking financial gambles is probably not a good idea. Be sure to talk to an attorney who focuses on bankruptcy cases before you make any definite moves. After all, your life and finances aren?t a board game.
