Nonfat dry milk, cocoa, and other milk products made by the Plainview Milk Products Cooperative are being recalled because they might be contaminated with Salmonella.

Plainview, of Plainview, Minnesota, sells foods to industry customer, including distributors and manufacturers who may then incorporate them into their own products.  The recall stretches back to products made over the past two years.

The Food and Drug Administration is working with the companies to identify and remove the potentially contaminated products.

There are no illnesses the FDA is reportedly aware of in connection with Plainview Milk Products.

The full list is available on the FDA web site but includes butter-flavored popcorn seasoning sold at Kroger;  instant non-fat dry milk sold at Meijer;   and  Malt-O-Meal  Maple & Brown Sugar;  CPI Foods, Non Fat Dry Milk;   NOW Foods Whey Protein Concentrate, among others.

Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. More often it makes people sick with fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In a statement, Plainview says that an FDA inspection found no Salmonella in their plant, but that it was found in a dairy shake powder.  The plant is cleaning their facility thoroughly, as the general manager says it's in the "public's best interest to be overly cautious."  #
