: Red Shoe RamblingsMy Dad
By NoReinsGirl
ADVERTISEMENTS
He and I have a unique bond. We always have since I was kid. Dad was my running buddy, joint heir of dark humour, and we've always been close. So here's a few memories of my Dad:
Roadtrips
Absolute blast with the guy. Gained his nickname "Napman" through them and can fall asleep the minute the car hits the highway. He and I can barely say two words on a 12 hour drive and communicate like pros.
Funniest Roadtrip Story
Watching a car in front of us drift into the median, realize its mistake, then practically flip the car when jerking it back into the fast lane. The over-correction landed them over to the shoulder whereupon they straightened up and proceeded in an orderly fashion in the slow lane. We still laugh uncontrollably at that memory and its been 19 yrs.
Favorite Candy Bar/Soda
Butterfinger & a Dr. Pepper, hands down. Took him both when he was waking up from having his knee replaced.
Loyalty and Dad's Word
Was 4 when I had my tonsils taken out and he couldn't stay at the hospital overnight with me. When I was in a near-fatal wreck and having a 2nd surgery he and Mom started to head out from my hospital room and he comes back in teary-eyed and states, "I told you when you were 4 y.o. if you never wanted to be alone at a hospital again, I wouldn't leave you. I'm gonna go home and shower, be back in 45 minutes". He came back and we stayed up and watched Carson, I drifted off to sleep while he slept in the chair in my room, and all was good. He's like that with everything.
Being an Athlete
He was a Decathlete and in the running for the Mexico City Olympic Trials held in Tahoe (1968). Wont' brag or talk about...so us three girls do it for him.
Military
Served in the Air Force. Following that he helped build the Third Stage of the Saturn V Rocket. Pretty cool stuff.
Dad is:
- Always behind us 100% no matter what the odds.
- Never demanding of perfection but demanding of my best...and that's it.
- My fellow Butterfinger/Dr.Pepper nut.
- Biggest fan of his grandkids sporting events...ALL OF THEM...my nephews and niece are blessed when "Grammie/Pop Go On Tour".
- Biggest fan of my past athletic endevours.
- Learning some law to my law school experience so he & I can talk about it.
- The giver of my passion for airplanes, photography, and sports.
- Frank Sinatra on valium...yes, he's incredibly mellow and relaxed. Very chilled out guy.
- Scarier when quiet...seriously. He still can stop my sisters and I in our tracks when he gets quiet. Just has a presence of intensity, authority, and love about him when he does it. (ie, saw my ex get quite angry and verbal with me and quietly walked over, looked at him, and said "don't go there." I think the birds stopped chirping and listened to Dad that day.)
Yeah, I have an incredible Dad.
