Consumers are being warned by the federal Food and Drug Administration not to consume the popular Nestle Toll House prepackaged, refrigerated cookie dough.

The company is recalling all varieties of the dough products due to the risk of contamination with E. coli 0157:H7, a bacterium that causes food borne illness.

Consumers, restaurants and retailers are advised to throw out the product. Even cooking the dough is not recommended because of the possibility the bacteria can transfer to hands and cooking surfaces.

66 reports have come in from 28 states since March of illnesses, usually vomiting, abdominal cramping, bloody diarrhea.  Healthy individuals can usually recover within a week, but the bacteria can lead to serious kidney damage and death among the most susceptible, the very young and elderly.

Individuals experiencing any of these symptoms are advised to contact a doctor, who is required to report the illness to state or local health authorities.

E. coli contamination is frequently associated with contaminated animal products, such as meat.

Nestle is providing a complete listing of the recalled products.

Consumers who have additional questions about these products should contact Nestle consumer services at 1-800-559-5025 and/or visit their Web site at www.verybestbaking.com.

Toll House products include refrigerated cookie dough in a bar, in a tub, in a tube as well as the limited edition cookie dough items or seasonal cookie dough (for Christmas) and Ultimates cookie bar dough. Other Toll House products are not affected.

No deaths have been associated with this recalls. #
