: Legal Pad | LATwo groups try to move same-sex marriage from courts to the ballot box
By Jason Siegel
While the state Supreme Court will hear arguments next month on same-sex marriage, two groups anti-LGBT marriage groups are trying to get a ban on the state ballot would overrule the court.
ProtectMarriage.com and VoteYesMarriage.com tried and failed to limit marriage to opposite-sex people in 2005. "The very fact that this is in front of the Supreme Court, I think, will highlight the need for voters to take the issue away from the courts period," Sacramento attorney Andrew Pugno told the Associated Press. Pugno represents ProtectMarriage.com.
They'd need signatures from 694,354 voters by late April to qualify for the November election. If passed, the ban would not only prohibit lesbian, gay and bisexual people from marrying, but remove spousal rights and tax benefits through registering as domestic partners.
