"Lighten Up" with Law Humor

By Beverly Burmeister

The Law Library has recently added to its collection, The Party of the First Part: the Curious World of Legalese by Adam Freedman. Freedman writes the "Legal Lingo" column for the New York Law Journal Magazine.

In this entertaining book, Freedman demystifies legal language, exploring the origin and definition of some well known as well as more obscure terms. According to William Safire in his Gifts of Gab column published August 19, 2007 in the New York Times, the book is a "a lighthearted but lucid explanation of legalese."

If you are getting bogged down with study, assignments or work, take a few moments to laugh -- you also may learn something. For your convenience, the book will be in the library's "New Books" display for a few weeks.
