Budget crisis closes Ventura County clerk's offices an hour early, daily

The Ventura County Superior Court has announced that its clerk's offices will close for one hour early every day beginning on July 1.

The clerk's office will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., rather than the customary 5 p.m., for processing of traffic citations, small claims, family law, criminal, juvenile, probate and records. Robert Sherman, assistant court executive officer for Ventura County, said overtime is also going to be eliminated as well as reducing the use of contract personnel, on top of an already-instituted hiring freeze.

The court lost $2 million from its budget for this fiscal year, which ends on June 30. As much as $8 million more could be cut in the next fiscal year.
