"Jonathan Schuppe, police reporter for the Newark Star- Ledger,, has won the 2008 Al Nakkula Award for Police Reporting. The Nakkula award is named for Al Nakkula, a 46-year veteran for the Rocky Mountain News who died in 1990. It is sponsored by the newspaper, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Denver Press Club."

" 'Schuppe accomplished what's so difficult in crime writing: putting a face to the story,' said judge Scott Bowles, 1992 winner of the award. 'He followed a kid out of juvenile detention to chronicle his shot at rehabilitation; he tracked a gun from the spot where it was purchased to the spot where it killed; and he told a poignant story of an inner city home's transformation from home to drug denizen. It's that kind of connection that resonates with readers - an impressive feat when covering the police beat,' Bowles said. Schuppe graduated with a B.A. in journalism from Lehigh University in 1993 and worked for several newspapers in New Jersey before joining the Star-Ledger in 1999."
