Lead in Lipstick Causes Debate

Advocacy groups, who contend that no amount of lead exposure is safe, are at odds with the Food and Drug Administration and cosmetics companies over the amount of lead found in lipstick. The FDA says the trace amounts included in some cosmetics are too low to create harm, and that previous reports that caused alarm were not found to be substantiated when evaluated by the agency. Both the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and several senators have called for the FDA to set lead safety standards for lipstick
