: BoardBuzz: NSBA's Daily WeblogTennessee students bust a myth:Who says kids don’t want to go to school?
How many of us feigned an illness when we were young in order to miss a day of school? Or for the parents out there… how many times have we had to battle the but-I-don’t-wanna-go-to-school-todays? Overall, kids get a bad rep for not wanting to go to school. That’s why BoardBuzz was thrilled to read this piece today from the Knoxville News Sentinel, where high school seniors from Blount County, Tennessee busted this myth by showing how much they value their education and the opportunities school will afford them.
The Blount Education Initiative (BEI) conducted a recent survey of adults and high school seniors in Blount County. The survey results showed that the students rated education as a greater priority than the adults did. When asked to rate the importance of a high school diploma on a scale of 1 to 10, the students gave it a 9.65, compared to the parents’ average of 7.0. For a college diploma, students rated it an average 8.26, and adults rated it an average of 6.9.
BoardBuzz hopes that the students from Blount County continue to place such a high value on education as they go on to be parents and leaders in their communities. BoardBuzz also thinks the adults in this community and across the country could learn something from this group of high school seniors. Blount County students, you have certainly put a smile on our faces for the beginning of this long, holiday weekend! (Adults, we’ll get back to you later…)
