Ground Beef Recalled From "Establishment" 5712 Hits 172,000 In Single Day With Second Notice From FSIS

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has been busy today dealing with "Establishment 5712" at  2302 1st St., Coal Valley, IL 61240-9408.  In the morning, USDA's Food Safety & Inspection Service announced the recall of almost 100,000 pounds of ground beef from "Establishment 5712" because the Ohio Department of Health had connected meat from that plant to E. coli infections in the Cleveland area.   Then late today, FSIS  announced another recall, this one for 76,000 pounds of ground beef from "Establishment 5712" because the Wisconsin Department of Health has connected meat from that plant to E. coli infections in that state.

In their morning press release, FSIS said "Establishment 5712" doing the near 100,000 pound recall was Valley Meats LLC, and in the afternoon announcement  "Establishment 5712" was J&B Meats Corporation and it was recalling 76,000 pounds of ground beef.   Both Valley Meats LLC and J&B Meats were reported to be based in tiny Coal Valley, IL, population 3600.   A modest facility at the corner of 23rd and 1st appears to be "Establishment 5712," housing both Valley Meats and J&B.

 Scroll back here for details on the morning recall.  The cluster of E. coli victims in Ohio has already resulted in one death as the Cleveland Health Department reports the passing of a little girl.  The death (likely due to Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome) appears linked to the 0157:H7 illnesses in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Illinois.  How this all shakes out with the Wisconsin findings remains to be seen.

Hopefully, there are no more meat companies doing business out of the Coal Valley establishment.  We continue with all its recalled products.
