: BoardBuzz: NSBA's Daily WeblogTexas reigns supreme (again)
Looks like our schools in Texas are doing something right, and we’re not suprised. First, BoardBuzz told you about the San Antonio student who won the Doodle4Google competition. And now another Texas student has topped his peers. Eric Yang, 13, won the National Geographic Bee yesterday. He is a product of Griffin Middle School in The Colony, outside of Dallas.
According to the article in USA Today,
Yang won first place in the 21st annual event ? hosted by Jeopardy’s Alex Trebek? along with $25,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and an all-expenses-paid trip to the Galapagos Islands to experience geography first-hand.
The one time Yang couldn’t nail the answer, though, was when Trebek asked him to name one of his weaknesses. “Um ?” was his response.
BoardBuzz loves to see kids excelling in their talents. And Eric is sure to go far. In fact, USA Today notes, “Even though Yang is only in seventh grade, he has scored a 2200 out of 2400 on the SATs. He says he enjoys crafting chess strategies, playing basketball and reading cookbooks.” Sounds like a renaissance man to us!
Congratulations Eric and all the students who competed in the National Geographic Bee. For more information and to watch video from the event, visit the GeoBee Challenge site.
