Austin Police Developing Photo Lineup Policies

That's the title of Tony Plohetski's report in this morning's Austin American-Statesman.  It's subtitled, "Effort comes amid wrongful convictions in Texas, nationwide."Austin police have begun drafting their first written policies for how investigators should conduct photo lineups, spurred in part by cases across the state and nation in which questionable procedures led to wrongful convictions. Officials said they are reviewing case studies, scientific data and the policies of other police agencies to learn the best practices for photo lineups. They also are discussing potential guidelines with Travis County prosecutors and studying data from groups such as the Justice Project, a nonprofit that works to improve accuracy in the criminal justice system and has conducted extensive research on police lineups...continue to full post
