: Dispatches from the Culture WarsJudge Issues Injunction Allowing Religious Posters
By Ed Brayton
A federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction (PDF) against the schools in Wilson County, Tennessee for censoring religious content in posters made by students and parents inviting other students to join in events at the school. The posters contained statements like "In God We Trust" and "God Bless America" and the school tried to censor those statements before allowing them to be put up on in the school lobby.
The students had made posters to advertise upcoming events, specifically the See You At the Pole prayer rally and a similar National Day of Prayer event. The events were privately organized, not school sponsored, and took place on school property before school began. The posters contained religious statements and the school said that violated school policy.
