Super Delegates Waiting?

By wt

ADVERTISEMENTS
Tad Devine, Mondale's "delegate counter" in 1984, writes this op-ed suggesting that Clinton and Obama should stop trying to get Super Delegates to pledge themselves either way.
Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama, and their campaigns, are pressuring superdelegates to pledge support to them before Democratic voters in the remaining primaries and caucuses have made their decisions. But Democratic leaders need to let the voters sort out which one of these two remarkable people will lead our party and, we hope, the nation.

After listening to the voters, the superdelegates can do what the Democratic Party?s rules originally envisioned. They can ratify the results of the primaries and caucuses in all 50 states by moving as a bloc toward the candidate who has proved to be the strongest in the contest that matters . . .

No one is picking up on my idea -- that Howard Dean can start gathering commitments from Super Delegates to vote for the winner of the pledged-delegate total.

But my idea, if I say so myself, is so good, that I think it will inevitably occur. Why?

1. It appears non-biased. It takes Clinton and Obama out of the equation and inputs Dean.

2. It looks like it's good for the party. This way the majority pledged-delegate winner gets to actually win the nomination.

3. It's not that hard. Commitments from 100-200 Super Delegates will blunt whatever advantage one candidate gains over the other from lobbying them.

Are you listening Howard Dean? I've got your solution right here.
