The Value of Time. And Space.

With all of the traveling & parents in town & new job starting some things slipped by the wayside. One such thing was laundry. This weekend, BISMOW and I found ourselves staring at a combined 6ish loads of laundry. We resigned ourselves to an evening of spaghetti, Food Network & laundry and slowly hauled all of it down to the community laundry room in my building. (Don't bring up the machine's in BISMOW's building. They were built when Ike was president & metal was scarce. They are scary, mildew smelling things and we are not using them.) My building recently "improved" the laundry room (i.e. they were sick of residents calling to scream about the machines that ate their money or spewed disgusting oily smoke onto the freshly laundered sheets) and switched from coin operated pieces of crap to card swipe operated pieces of crap. To pay for the sub-par washing you have to insert money into a machine that transfers the value to your card.

With a meager $4 on the card we got ready to load it up...only to discover that the motor that "grabs" the money was broken....so we had no way of putting value onto the laundry card. We trudged around the neighborhood looking for other laundry rooms that used the same system and came up empty handed. We sadly/angrily went home, picked through and found the most important pieces that we desperately needed clean and used our remaining $4. This morning BISMOW took the remaining 30 pounds (yes, 30) to a nearby cleaner's and paid to have our laundry professionally washed. This is a service I've never utilized before as I'm very picky about my laundry and have a "system" that isn't really a system as much as it is my personal preference on how I like each and every article of clothing washed, dried, fragranced, folded and put away. Someone breaking my "system" makes me twitchy. (Side note: the spaghetti dream also went down the tubes when I realizes rather sadly that I hadn't thawed my special James Beard homemade spaghetti sauce and instead had thawed Grandpa BISMOW's secret recipe chili. Which is delicious but not so much with garlic bread & whole wheat spaghetti noodles.)

Until the clean laundry came home tonight. As I looked at my skiivies, folded and arranged by color, and my pj's all in order..... I gazed at them lovingly. BISMOW even took my special detergent to the cleaner and so it even smelled just like my laundry! Then the sheets and towels came out, perfectly folded into tiny neat little piles and I began to wonder how much more space I was going to have in my linen closet.

Then I began trying to come up with a mathematical formula to prove to BISMOW that paying someone to do our laundry was totally economical when compared to the glorious organization of skiivie drawers, t-shirt shelves and pj baskets and oh my goodness look at my beautiful linen cupboard.

Some people dream of BMW's and condos and pretty shiny Prada shoes. And while I still dream of (some of) these things, I also dream of the perfect drawers. Call me Martha & donate $1. It covers a pound of laundry and equates to at least an hour of my happiness.
