1L Opening/Closing Competition. (Archive Post)

By Steve Pirates

ADVERTISEMENTS

Our school is putting on a competition for 1Ls to make opening and closing arguments. I?m excited for it, there?s nothing better than a bunch of people who have no concept of what an opening or closing argument really is trying to out open or close one another.

I really imagine people just mimicking Law & Order, or jumping up in the middle of other people?s speeches yelling, ?I object.? While I certainly appreciate that they are trying to get us 1L?s involved in advocacy situations early, I really think they should have a system to teach us about these things before we actually try to do them.

I am excited about the prospect of going up against the other obnoxiously talkative kids in class. We had the informational meeting to discuss the format of the event today, and the usual suspects were there. Mr. Opinionez, Ms. Political-Theory, and Mr. I-Feel-That were in attendance. I also saw a few people from the summer program in at the meeting who I haven?t seen since August. Surprisingly, there were a few people there who have never spoken in class. Those are the ones I am the most nervous about competing against, because they could be total ringers. I imagine this one guy who never talks in my class, this skinny little guy, having a huge James Earl Jones voice.

The next few weeks as we prepare for this competition should be fun.
