Hanging on to your lawyer is not something all clients want, but attorney retention is a big issue for law firms.  The New York Times took a look at the issue recently, noting that firms are changing their attitudes towards their staff, adopting flexible work times, schedules and the partnership track. The Times quotes Deborah Epstein Henry, who founded Flex-Time Lawyers, a consulting firm that creates initiatives encouraging work-life balance for law firms, with an emphasis on the retention and promotion of women. ?The firms don?t think of it as a movement, because it is happening in isolation, one firm at a time. But if you step back and see the whole puzzle, there is definitely real change.?

Whether all of this is ‘a movement’ or not remains to be seen, but as JD Bliss point out, it has to be good news and the Times piece follows up an ABA Journal article outlining how even the most tradition-bound law firms are now adopting new, work-life work practices.
