: Environmental Crimes BlogThe Fugitive List ? It Does Work
By Walter James
I never thought it would work, but, I guess it does. The USEPA?s most-wanted list is now four fewer. According to published reports last week, one fugitive on the ten-most-wanted list, Bhavesh H. Kamdar, surrendered to authorities last month. Two others were actually apprehended captured in 2008 before the ten-most-wanted list was publicized. The fourth, Larkin Baggett, was shot in Florida, near Miami. Baggett pointed a loaded rifle at officers Tuesday morning at a marina in Marathon, Florida., in the heart of the Florida Keys.
Baggett had been indicted in Utah for violations of RCRA and the CWA and was one of twenty-three (23) people initially listed on the USEPA?s list of fugitives. The USEPA received a tip about Baggett's possible whereabouts after he showed up on the list. Acting on the tip, USEPA agents went to apprehend Baggett. The USEPA agents and Monroe County deputies confronted Baggett. When Baggett emerged from a trailer and pointed a rifle at the officers, they shot Baggett in the face and buttocks (now that?s a kick in the ass, isn?t it).
The USEPA has received about seventy (70) tips since the fugitive web site was launched three months ago.
More later.
