Raising Hopes

By Anne Skove, Esq.

ADVERTISEMENTS

We used to work at a place where a picture-perfect score plus glowing comments on your performance review resulted in a 5 or 6% raise (depending on what kind of year the place was having).

A good friend of mine who worked in the private sector told me if he got that kind of raise, it was a sign pointing to the exit door.

So although it might not sound like much to some, a 29% raise is high for a public service-type job. But if you haven't gotten a raise (perhaps not even cost-of-living) since 1991(!) it's a pretty big event.

It looks as though the 29% raise for federal judges will make it through the Senate this time. The raise would still make the highest-paid judge, Chief Justice Roberts, a mere "thousandaire." CJ Roberts would top the pay scales at $279,000.

See Panel Advances Pay Raises for Judges, AP (January 31, 2008).
