Leading Experts Explore Ways Forward For Financial Institutions

ADVERTISEMENTS

Leading experts on financial regulation, and securities litigation gathered recently to advance and debate ideas on restructuring oversight of the nation’s financial system. The participants, including Donald Langevoort, a Georgetown University Law Center professor, Damon Silvers, of the Congressional Oversight Panel, and Nell Minow, editor and co-founder of the Corporate Library, tackled the bailout of American financial institutions, the future of the Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as what kind of regulations are during the severe economic downturn.

New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson Jr., provided the keynote address at the gathering, which was hosted by ACS and Columbia Law School. During his keynote, Thompson (right) bluntly gave his assessment of the nation’s financial meltdown. “What got us into this mess,” Thompson asked. “Bottom line is just absolute greed. Everybody along the way was making money.” Thompson added, “It has taken a bit of a perfect storm to get, not just the country, but the world into a recession, the likes of which we have never seen.” The gathering in New York City included two panel discussions. Video of those discussions are available here and here.

Minow also recently provided an exclusive interview to ACSBlog about regulations that should be adopted for oversight of the financial community. That interview is available here.
