When I was a kid, I wore out my cassette tape of Simon & Garfunkel's 1981 Concert in Central Park. I still remember them introducing the band, including "Gerry Niewood on saxophone." That's why I instantly recognized the name when I heard that Gerry Niewood died this week. He and a bandmate, Coleman Mallett, were on that commuter plane that went down outside Buffalo. They were on their way to do a concert with Chuck Mangione. What a weird, sad blast from the past.
Here's a clip with Niewood absolutely tearing up a sax solo in "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard." (The full concert is available here.)
