: ConglomerateConglomerate Book Club: The Law Market
By Gordon Smith, Christine, Hurt, Vic Fleischer, Fred Tung, Lisa Fairfax, David Zaring
We are pleased to announce the next installment of the Conglomerate Book Club.
Our last book club reviewed Larry Mitchell's book, The Speculation Economy. This time, we will focus on a new book by Erin O'Hara and Larry Ribstein, The Law Market. Erin is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Director of the Law & Human Behavior Program at Vanderbilt Law School, and Larry is the Mildred Van Voorhis Jones Chair at the University of Illinois College of Law.
As many Glom readers will know, Erin and Larry have together and separately written a number of important papers on choice of law and regulatory competition (among other things!) in the past few years, and their new book offers a detailed and wide ranging discussion of law markets in a number of contexts, including the usual suspects (e.g., corporate law and business formation) and some unusual ones as well (e.g., marriage, property law). The book has already garnered some attention, having been the subject of an AEI Book Forum. Book Club reviewers will include choice of law experts Paul Stephan, the Lewis F. Powell, Jr., Professor of Law and Elizabeth and Richard Merrill Research Professor at the University of Virginia School of Law, and Joel Trachtman, Professor of International Law, and formerly the Academic Dean and Interim Dean, at The Fletcher School at Tufts University. I will also offer my thoughts.
This Book Club will commence on Wednesday, March 18th. Each of the reviewers will write a brief review of the book, about the length of a typical blog post. And we will post those reviews on the blog. Erin and Larry will respond to the reviews, and then we will carry on the discussion in the comments. Please make some time in your schedule to read the book and join us for the discussion.
