Like most bloggers out there, I use a stats tracker to see who comes around this page of the internet. Don't worry, I really can't find out who people are, rather, where they live (city & state) and how they came here. For instance I can tell when people come through a search engine (most come from Google) and what they searched that brought them to this crazy corner of the internet. That deserves a post in itself. For instance, to the person who Googled "I Have No Ambition" ...I don't know what to tell you. Sounds like you have a problem? Especially if you have the ambition to Google the fact that you don't have any ambition? It is quite the modern day mystery. To the people (yes, people as in plural) who find me by Googling "How to vomit quietly" - I think you have a problem. My post was about a hangover at work, not an eating disorder. And I think you should talk to someone about your desire to throw up your mocha rather than Googling advice from The Internet People about how to not-get caught. The number one thing that brings new readers via Google? "Salami Squishes" I'm glad I have the market cornered on that one.
Another thing I can look at on my tracker (I use Google Analytics for those wondering) is referring sites. For instance, the majority of my site traffic comes from The Namby Pamby & Overflowing Brain. Today when I logged in however, I was in for a surprise. I had a new website referring a rather large number of people over here.
Specifically a website called http://www.chicagosbestblogs.com/ run by the Chicago Tribune. As in, someone over there put me on a list of the best blogs of Chicago, as endorsed by one of the two major newspapers.
To say I was shocked is an understatement.
I mean, last year Grace, The Namby and myself were listed along with Above the Law as the Top Blogs Across the Pond by a European law website, Law & More. I determined this was a fluke. I commonly discuss my crazy family & the even crazier world of young lawyers (read: we drink a lot of red wine). I don't commonly discuss the law, at least not in a way that makes me academic or knowledgeable. Even though I tease The Namby that his listing on the ABA (American Bar Association) Best Blogs article(s) was a fluke, I concede that he actually writes about practicing law. Which I'm not currently doing, so instead I discuss all the fun things you can do when you are unemployed. (Watch TV online. Peruse the magazine section at Borders. People-watch at the Daley Center. Buy your groceries at 10 am when the aisles are mercifully empty.)
Anyway. Big shout-out to the people over at the Chicago Tribune (Hey! Are you hiring? I could totally write a column called Unemployment in The City. It would be like Sex & The City but um, you know. My life? As an unemployed lawyer. No? Sleep on it. The genius will hit you in the morning.) for adding me to the list. I'm going to peruse the rest of the blogs they list because, hey, you never know.
And to the rest of you who stop by for my off-brand humour & vignettes about my crazy Southern roots? I love y'all.
And the new readers? I promise I'll try to use spell-check more often. I solemnly swear.
Oh? And for those of you that made it this far, all the way down to the bottom of this post? I have a job interview tomorros. Shhh. Don't tell anyone.
