Valentines Day

By "Daisy Duke"

ADVERTISEMENTS
A few weeks ago (specifically, say, the first week of January) I walked into a large grocery store with BISMOW and found myself assaulted by the Valentines Day crap. I can't call it stuff because it isn't stuff it is crap. If BISMOW (or any of you sneaky buggers) ever purchased me a 4 foot tall white bear with a satin heart for a tummy that says "I LOVE YOU" I'd decapitate it and use the head to stuff down his/your throat. I turned to BISMOW in the store and just went "What the......" and he laughed and we agreed, dude, man, seriously, THE FIRST WEEK IN JANUARY?

And of course as sneaky February 14 comes closer, suddenly we get the commercials. The displays. The suggestions that your loved one wants a diamond/a timepiece/a new car/a new cell phone/McDonalds for Valentines Day. The nice restaurants slowly plan their pre fix menus so if you happen to want to eat out on February 14 (heaven forbid) you will be subjected to a 9:00 reservation for you COMPLIMENTARY! CHAMPAGNE! and a $40 a piece option in which you can select the salmon (dry and fishy) or the beef (cheap & overcooked).

In case you haven't caught on, I'm not big on Valentines Day. Last year I remember BISMOW and I exchanged cards and made dinner that night. I think we bought a nice bottle of wine. The end. That weekend we made a reservation at a steak house that we both enjoy and we went and sat amongst normal people and ordered what we wanted off the menu, not what the chef decided was easiest to make for 120 tables of 2.

Valentine's Day as a child was wonderful. You brought your shoe-box to school and decorated it and spent a few evenings filling out cards for all your classmates (Even meanie meanie Tene Cherry who to this day will be remembered as a HUGE FAT MEANIE HEAD) and then you had a party with cupcakes and candy hearts and you ate way too much sugar and had a throughly enjoyable time. By the time you hit high school however, things got pretty miserable because there was always someone with a huge display of affection and if it wasn't you, there you were sitting in Calculus thinking "Man no one got me two dozen pink tulips." You know what I'm talking about. Some jerk-face guy always decided he would make some girl's Valentine's Day magical and thus ruined every other girl who so much as saw her in the hallway that day.

What I'm saying is, adults have killed Valentines Day.  This doesn't come from a bitter person, I've received many lovely Valentines Day gifts (helllloo Tiffany's!) and been taking out to dinner and received the obligatory roses. I've also spent the day alone, with my girlfriends, bemoaning the lack of available men.

BISMOW and I are spending this Valentines Day with my parents. I think it sounds lovely; we shall relax and my Mom will make a great dinner and we'll spend the day with more people we love, and we can exchange cards. This is my stand against the Hallmark Holiday this sucker has become.

(I'm secretly hoping someone gets me the "Happy F {>cking Valentines Day" card I saw at Paper Source.)

And besides, February 15 is the greatest holiday of all time- Half Priced Chocolates Day. Come on, celebrate with me.
