After a whirlwind and fantastic weekend -including a wine & dessert party complete with Overflowing Brain, The Namby Pamby, Law With Grace, The Artful Blogger, The Alleged Lady, and our sidekicks PAG, Melissa & Scuba Steve (gold ribbon baking awards to Artful, Melissa, Katie & myself) - I finally ventured outside today and went down to jury duty. Being an attorney I knew my chances of getting picked were slim. Ta-da! I was right! But not until I sat around in a courtroom all daaaay loooong listening to other people answer the same questions as the person before them and the person before them. One of Judge Hatchett's cousins was in the courtroom (probably the most humorous answer to the question "are any of your family member's attorneys or judges") and of course the judge raised his eyebrow at me and my lawyer-status. And the other two lawyer-potential-jurors. Of course it is always sad when they ask if anyone is the victim of a crime (still feel horrible for the man who announced his sister was shot & raped 30 years ago, and no Your Honor, no one was apprehended, and oh, his testimony in a murder case was from something different specifically when he saw a murder right in front of him on the sidewalk- crazy life of a computer programmer) and the like. I think I won for best-answer-to-the-victim-of-a-crime question, because he asked me when my wallet was stolen and I said "On the last day of the July 2008 bar exam" and the Judge just looked at me with pity and then said "Well I hope it happened after you finished taking the exam and not during it" and then everyone laughed. Hahahaha. Soo funny, my stolen wallet. Almost as funny as the 10 potential juror's who had been ROBBED AT GUNPOINT and NONE of them ever had a suspect arrested. Because that isn't depressing.
And of course it wasn't shocking that the people who were selected to sit on the jury were all the people who answered that they had previously served on a jury. I think those must be sad people, who sit on multiple jury's in their lifetime. I think that is like the court system is announcing you have no personality or life experience, because man, you have no bias.
Oh! And Katie/La-a/Overflowing Brain is awesome and I pink puffy heart her and the fact that she was ok with lying on my couch with me until noon on Sunday morning while we complained about MEN and LIFE and THE FACT THAT NO ONE WAS BRINGING US CINNAMON ROLLS. That and she is really fabulous & totally adorable and I didn't even make fun of her broken foot once. And I gave her an ice pack when she slammed her brain-surgeried-head into my wall and only giggled a little. Melissa on the other hand laughed a lot. And then we had some more wine which we determined is the solution to all of life's problems, other than the heart-warming moment when Law With Grace informed Katie that she was going to shank her. Which in Grace terms means she also pink puffy hearted her.
