Girl Scout Thin Mints Missing Kosher Label

It’s that time of year again, Girl Scout cookie season. Thin mints anyone?

It appears that 14 million boxes of Thin Mint cookie boxes are missing the kosher symbol, which informs consumers that the contents adhere to Jewish dietary laws.

In November, a customer noticed the error that was apparently missed by proofreaders. The kosher symbol, a circle with a U inside accompanied by a “D” indicates the product is kosher and contains some milk or milk derivative.

Thin Mints account for nearly 25 percent of Girl Scout cookie sales, said Raymond Baxter, president and chief of Interbake Foods, the parent company of ABC Bakers, one of two approved manufacturers of the cookies.

ABC Bakers swiftly sent a letter to Scout Councils explaining the oversight and showed proof of kosher certification (from The Orthodox Union, a non-profit that has been a leader in the field of kosher supervision, for more than 70 years).

Girl Scout Peanut Butter Sandwiches are Safe:

Those who are nervous about eating Girl Scout cookies with peanut butter – have no fear, they are perfectly safe and have not been affected by the salmonella outbreak.

One of Girl Scouts famous cookies is their Peanut Butter Sandwiches. Cookies are sold January through March, although some troops sell cookies in the fall.

ABC Bakers and Little Brownie Bakers, both licensed bakers affiliated with Girl Scout Cookies, have recently released statements that their peanut butter supplier is not involved in the current peanut butter warning.

They have confirmed their peanut butter is bought from Hampton Farms, which was recently audited by the FDA and was free from salmonella.

Basically, this means Girl Scout cookies are in no way involved in the salmonella outbreak and you can buy as many boxes of Peanut Butter Sandwiches as you desire. Enjoy! #
